Can CBD help relieve osteoarthritis pain?
Cannabidiol, a molecule derived from the hemp plant, is known to have potential effects on the body. More and more studies are therefore being launched to better understand how it works, what mechanisms it activates and, above all, what its final effects are on the human body. In the remainder of this article, we'll be focusing on the issue of pain, and in particular that associated withosteoarthritis. Can CBD help? We'll try to answer that question.

Do you suffer from osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most widespread joint disease in the world. A progressive disease characterized by the destruction of cartilage around joint structures (bone and/or synovial tissue). As a result, the joints no longer glide towards each other as naturally as they should. They rub against each other, resulting in intense pain.
The problem is that the disease progresses and gradually targets all the body's joints, making the slightest movement truly complicated. To relieve osteoarthritis, doctors most often recommend drugs such as corticosteroid injections, non-steroidal inflammatory drugs, etc...
What about CBD? A number of studies have shown that cannabidiol can help people suffering from this type of illness. But how interesting is this cannabinoid?
CBD and osteoarthritis
A molecule derived from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol is a cannabinoid in the same way as THC, tetrahydrocannabinol (the active molecule in the hemp plant). Its action differs, however. In fact, CBD is not psychoactive, has no undesirable effects and even has some relatively interesting effects on the body, notably in terms of :
- Stress and anxiety;
- Addictions;
- Pain and inflammation.
It's this last point that we're going to focus on today. CBD is said to have an analgesic action that could make it a gentle, natural alternative to certain heavy treatments, which can cause side effects and even addiction.
CBD and osteoarthritis, the latest studies
Several preclinical and clinical studies are attempting to demonstrate how CBD could help relieve osteoarthritis sufferers of acute or chronic pain. Find out which ones!
CBD as a painkiller?
In 2017, a study conducted by American rheumatologist Prof. Philpott demonstrated that CBD could be of particular interest. This preclinical study was carried out on rats suffering from osteoarthritis. CBD quickly demonstrated an analgesic action, making the rats feel less pain. They also became more active and moved more.
More than just a rapid, immediate effect, CBD is also said to have a long-term effect. Indeed, cannabidiol is said to play a preventive role, enabling the brain and body to better manage inflammation several days, even weeks, after treatment. Of course, this information has yet to be confirmed by human studies.
CBD, an inflammation modulator
In 2016, an initial study attempted to demonstrate how CBD could positively impact patients suffering from osteoarthritis, arthritis and rheumatism more generally. Once again, rodents suffering from rheumatism were tested. They were given CBD by topical application.
4 days after application of the treatment, inflammation had decreased significantly. CBD in the form of a cream or balm thus revealed an interesting action, modulating inflammation and thus improving pain management, all without undesirable side effects... Allowing the rodents to regain a certain degree of motor skills.
CBD, arthritis and rheumatism
In addition to osteoarthritis, CBD could also be useful for arthritis sufferers. In a preclinical study on rodents, CBD was shown to modulate the CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, directly associated with the pain message.
This modulating action is thought to reduce the inflammatory message. Naturally, rodents administered CBD began to move better, and thus to be more active. Here again, further studies are required, particularly in humans.
