Is HHC legal in France?
In the United States, as elsewhere in the world, hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is becoming increasingly popular with consumers. The problem is that, whether in the U.S. or France, the legislation surrounding HHC remains rather vague. Potentially very powerful, HHC products are not certified by any standard (ISO, European or French) and generally lack any certificate of analysis. That's why, in the remainder of this article, we're going to try and shed some light on the subject, to help you sort out what's real and what's not, and to give you all the clues you need to better understand what HHC is and, above all, whether the products derived from it are indeed legal or not.

What is HHC?
HHC (for hexahydrocannabinol) is a substance, a semi-synthetic molecule. It was created/discovered in 10944, by the American chemist Roger Adams, via thehydrogenation process (addition of hydrogen). However, it's only very recently that HHC-enriched products have begun to develop and reach the market. Since then, this type of product has continued to proliferate.
But why? Although different, HHC and THC are very similar. In fact, the supposed effects of HHC are almost identical to those of THC. As a result, rather than turning to cannabis, which is illegal in some regions, consumers are opting for a product that is still tolerated.
What are the effects of HHC?
The cannabis plant, the hemp plant and certain cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are being studied in particular by the scientific community. Their effects, benefits and side effects are beginning to be well known. As for HHC, studies are still in their infancy.
Manufacturers are quite free to add various chemicals and other compounds harmful to the body, so there is (to date) no real certainty about hexahydrocannabinol, its potency and its action on the body.
Ultimately, the way HHC works depends above all on the end consumer. The reason? HHC is composed of two molecules:
- 9R HHC: a molecule that binds naturally to CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors.
- 9S HHC: the molecular structure of 9S HHC differs from that of its cousin. In fact, this molecule does not bind as well to endocannabinoid receptors.
We're particularly interested in 9R HHC, since preliminary studies suggest that its effects are quite similar to those of THC. However (as is often the case), how you feel will depend above all on how the product has been processed, but also on its potency.
Some research (still in its preliminary stages) shows that HHC taken in large quantities can have effects similar to those of morphine. Some people find themselves in a state of "high". Others, on the other hand, feel more energetic. For some, HHC reduces pain, headaches and moodiness. In short, it's hard to say for sure, as sensations and feedback vary so widely!
Is HHC dangerous?
As is often the case when a new product arrives on the market or starts to make headlines, many questions arise about its legality and potential side effects on health. In our case, there is too little research on hexahydrocannabinol to be able to say with any certainty (in terms of potential dangers, addiction, etc.).
Ideally, if you're running a CBD shop, CBD e-commerce business or similar, and you'd like to find out more about HHC, the legality of HHC, the origin of the seeds or anything else, don't hesitate to ask questions and follow up with the supplier you're working with. This will keep you up to date with the latest studies, research and legislative advances on the subject. Ideal for advising your customers and helping them find the products they need.
Is HHC legal?
Now for the big question. Is HHC legal in France? For the moment, the answer seems to be yes. In fact, at the time of writing, there is no law or treaty on the subject in any country, be it national or European. The only certainty is that whenever the issue of products derived from hemp is raised, the subject of THC must be addressed. The THC content (tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychotropic molecule of the cannabis plant) must never exceed 0.2%.
HHC legal: our opinion
A semi-synthetic cannabinoid presented as perfectly legal, HHC is nonetheless a product that needs to be approached with care. Although more and more people are talking about it, we insist that we know very little about HHC itself, its action, its potential benefits and what it could mean for consumers in the short to medium term.
That's why we recommend caution. If you are a professional in the field of hemp products and would like to diversify your offer, remind your customers that HHC is still a bit of a "mystery" and that, although research is ongoing, further analysis and studies should enable us to learn more.
Finally, if your customers want to learn a little more before taking the plunge, or turn to safer types of product, don't hesitate to use your knowledge and redirect them to your many CBD-rich products (oil de CBD, flower de CBD, hash de CBD etc...), produced under controlled conditions.
