Understanding the effects of CBNa, cannabinolic acid

The hemp plant, the cannabis plant, is not just CBD or THC. On the contrary, there are hundreds of different molecules, called cannabinoids... One of which is CBNa. What is CBNa?

CBNa is an abbreviation describing the precursor of cannabinolic acid, a cannabinoid found in the hemp and cannabis plants. To be even clearer, CBNa is a derivative of THC, tetrahydrocannabinol.

This CBNa molecule, when exposed to heat, is then transformed into CBN. This process is called decarboxylation, and it works with virtually all other cannabinoids.

CBN and CBNa are cannabinoids that are not found in large quantities. It is generally accepted that cannabinol and cannabinolic acid concentrations range from 0.1% to 1.5%.

Discovering CBNa

If you didn't already know, CBN (cannabinol) was the very first cannabinoid to be isolated from the cannabis plant. Its discovery dates back to the early 1800s, proving that hemp and marijuana have always intrigued scientists.

CBNa, on the other hand, is a molecule that was not isolated and synthesized until much later in the 20th century (at the same time as many other cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBG or CBGa).

CBNa's action on the body

What about the action and possible effects of CBNa on the body? The first thing to know is that cannabinolic acid is non-toxic. Unlike THC, the active molecule in the cannabis plant, it does not induce intoxication.

However, some research seems to suggest an action similar to that of CBD. CBNa (or even CBN), for example, could :

  • Acts as an analgesic to relieve inflammation and pain;
  • Acting as a neuroprotector;
  • Stimulate appetite;
  • Have potentially interesting effects on patients suffering from serious pathologies, such as certain cancers.

From a natural point of view, too much CBNa has an impact on the cannabis plant, accelerating its ageing process. That's why it's not found in huge quantities.

CBNa and scientific studies

Generally speaking, scientists prefer not to study precursor molecules, such as CBDa or THCa, but rather "finished" cannabinoids. However, CBNa is particularly interesting and, although the number of studies is limited, scientists seem to agree that CBNa is truly surprising.

In broad terms, the CBNa would enable :

  • Support patients suffering from certain types of cancer;
  • Act as a powerful antibacterial agent.

CBNa and cancer

Researchers at Cannabics Pharmaceuticals in Israel have demonstrated that certain cannabinoids, such as CBN, CBNa, CBC and CBCa, are of particular interest in the fight against certain serious diseases, including colon cancer.

These cannabinoids act as necrotic agents. In other words, they promote the degradation and destruction of diseased cells. Ultimately, this strengthens the fight against the spread of cancer cells.

This discovery indicates that the potency of CBNa and CBCa is equal to that of their non-acidic brothers, CBN and CBC. THCa is another acidic precursor molecule capable of preventing the proliferation of breast and prostate cancer.

CBN derivatives fight certain types of bacteria

Some studies suggest that most cannabinoids are particularly useful and interesting for combating the proliferation of certain bacteria. CBN is one of them. But what about CBNa? It turns out that CBNa derivatives can combat certain types of bacteria.

According to a recent article, CBNa has demonstrated an antibacterial action as powerful as that of CBG (recognized as one of the most useful cannabinoids in this respect, probably even more powerful than some existing treatments).

CBNa could also help fight two types of bacteria:

  • Candida albicans: a pathogenic yeast that commonly causes fungal infections, particularly of the genitals.
  • M. intracellulare: a mycobacterium that causes infections of the respiratory system. These infections can be quite severe.
