Have you ever heard of THCH(tetrahydrocannabihexol)? Chances are you haven't. As a minor, little-known cannabinoid, chances are you've never heard of it. But in a world where research is advancing rapidly on the subject of hemp and cannabis, this new cannabinoid is likely to quickly establish itself as one of those new molecules to which you, as a retailer, and your consumers may be tempted to turn.

THCH definition

What is THCH?

THCH (tetrahydrocannabihexol), also known by the more complex name D9-tetrahydrocannabihexol-D9-THCH, is a minor cannabinoid found in the plant hemp. In other words, it occurs naturally, but in very small quantities. A new addition to the long list of "neo-cannabinoids".

It was discovered in 2019. Indeed, it was thanks to a research document unearthed from the archives that researchers took note of its existence. It was then isolated, for the very first time, in 2020. Since then? While the number of studies on its subject is sorely lacking, we do know a little more about its molecular structure and effects.

To be perfectly clear, THCH has a rather specific chemical structure. It has a longer n-hexyl side chain than THC, with six carbon atoms. This automatically makes it one of the most psychoactive cannabinoids ever discovered.

The effects of THC

As the number of studies on THCH is anecdotal, it is not yet clear how this molecule might act in the consumer's favor. However, research on THC and some of its derivatives suggests that THCH may act on the appetite, by stimulating it, which would be beneficial for people with eating disorders.

THCH could also have an analgesic action, helping to relieve pain and certain inflammations. The molecule could also have neuroprotective properties, acting as a powerful anti-nausea and anti-vomiting agent. Of course, these are just hypotheses and require further research.

Is THCH psychoactive?

definition thch

The answer is yes!

Indeed, THCH is a cousin molecule of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is known as the psychotropic molecule of the cannabis plant. But THCH, with its different molecular structure presented above, is far more potent than THC.

Consumption of a product made from THCH isolate could therefore lead to the appearance of intoxicating effects. In addition, side effects such as red eyes, cravings, dizziness and nausea may occur, although further studies are needed.

This naturally raises the question of its legality. Can THCH be legally produced, sold and consumed? At this stage, it's difficult to give a precise answer. THCH, like THCP or THCPO for example, is not currently on the list of narcotic cannabinoids and is therefore prohibited.

In the same way as HHC (hexahydrocannabinol), THCH could, in the months or years to come, be considered by the authorities to be a prohibited molecule. In the meantime, this grey area may benefit retailers and consumers alike, provided that the product concerned contains less than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the threshold limit imposed by French law.

THCH-based products

To date, there are virtually no over-the-counter THCH-based products. This molecule is still too little known. However, we can imagine that over the next few years, more and more CBD brands will position themselves in this segment, if the law remains on their side.

So we could be seeing THCH e-liquids, THCH oils, THCH gummies and THCH flowers. Achieving such a result is easy! In fact, all these products would be processed from a neutral base, which would then be enriched with a THCH isolate.

This isolate gives the products in question their full appeal. But beware. Consumption of a THCH-based product presupposes a full and thorough understanding of the individual's ability to tolerate cannabinoids. These products will therefore not be suitable for everyone.

To remember about this neo-cannabinoid

THCH is a relatively new and unique cannabinoid. It has only recently been discovered, and its potential is very interesting indeed. However, many questions remain, notably as to its potency and its impact on long-term health (from a scientific point of view).

What about legislative developments? Currently perceived as " legal", this product could well be banned in the months and years to come, along with other compounds of the cannabis plant, such as THCJD or THCB, which are fairly new cannabinoids sure to attract consumer interest.
