CBD endometriosis

How can CBD help with endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a painful, chronic gynecological disease that only affects women of childbearing age. The disease is characterized by the development of the endometrium, a uterine mucous membrane, outside theuterus. This endometrium then "attacks" and "colonizes" other nearby organs, leading in some cases to pain that is really difficult to manage on a daily basis, and may even make it impossible to have children.

While some treatments do exist, today they "only" relieve the pain caused, but do not provide a true cure, which is why all options are still on the table. What about CBD? Could cannabidiol be useful for women wishing to combatendometriosis? We explain absolutely everything you need to know on the subject, in the rest of this article.

What is endometriosis?

Long ignored, endometriosis is a difficult disease to live with on a daily basis. It is characterized by the presence of tissues similar to those of the uterine lining (endometrium) outside the uterine cavity. Like conventional tissues, these will undergo hormonal changes with each menstrual cycle, resulting in sometimes unbearable pain.

Endometriosis is a progressive disease. This means that the tissue grows and often reaches other organs. This continuous development leads to pain that can be disabling and even incapacitating.

In some cases, it can even prevent a woman from having children. The impact of this disease is far-reaching, affecting a person's personal and conjugal life, as well as their professional and social life.

How to treat yourself?

To relieve endometriosis, doctors tend to prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs such asaspirin oribuprofen. However, these pills only treat the consequences of the problem, not the problem itself. Finally, these drugs have side effects when taken for long periods, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract (risk of lesions and other forms of pain).

Another solution is to undergo surgery. A doctor can remove nodules, cysts and, in the most advanced cases of endometriosis, even the uterus. However, this is a last-resort solution, often preferred when there is no other option and the patient no longer responds to anti-inflammatory drugs.

CBD and THC for endometriosis-related pain

Is medical cannabis a solution? As explained above, endometriosis is a difficult disease to manage. In fact, there is little or no way to relieve the patient.

While some opt for prescribed treatments, others prefer to turn to a more natural alternative. In some countries, such as the USA, cannabis is authorized for therapeutic use.

An initial study in 2013

A 2013 study approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) showed that vaporizing THC at 1.29% could considerably relieve the pain and cramps associated with this disease, by around 30%.

A second study, conducted in Australia in 2019 by Drs. Justin Sinclair and Mike Armour, supported this view. Out of 484 women, one in 10 admitted to using medical cannabis to relieve endometriosis-related pain. This is explained by the action of all cannabinoids on CB2 endocannabinoid receptors, directly associated with pain and inflammation.

Cannabinoids and endometrial cell development

One of the main symptoms of endometriosis is the development and proliferation of endometrial cells in the rest of the body. However, it would appear that consumption of CBD- or THC-based products (in countries where medical cannabis is authorized) can slow or even halt the migration of these cells.

In Spain, a preclinical study was conducted by Dr. Rafael Maldonado. Over a 28-day period, he administered 2mg/kg THC to mice suffering from endometriosis-related pain.

With immediate effect, the rodents showed that they no longer suffered, or suffered much less, from abdominal pain. An analysis of the endometrium of these mice showed that endometrial cell growth and migration were considerably slowed.

Cannabinoids and vascularization

In addition to migration, endometrial cells need to be supplied. To do this, they create their own network of blood vessels. This phenomenon is known as vascularization. By cutting off this blood supply, it is then possible to prevent the cells from growing, and thus potentially becoming painful for the woman.

CBD 's role here is essential: by activating endocannabinoid receptors and regulating blood flow, the researchers noted that cannabidiol, along with all the other cannabinoids, was able to block this vascularization process.

Which CBD product for endometriosis?

There are several types of CBD-based products to relieve the pain associated with endometriosis. The most highly recommended isCBD oil, which contains between 10% and 40%CBD. oil is simply taken by placing a few drops under the tongue. It takes 5 to 15 minutes for the effects to kick in.

However, it is possible to take a flower of CBD by vaporization, although at work or on the street, it can be quite tricky to do so. At home, on the other hand, it poses no problem. Vaporizing is safe for the lungs and allows CBD to take effect immediately.

Another solution is to apply a cream or balm rich in CBD and hempdirectly on sore areas. Finally, it's possible to mix your intake and opt for a tea bag CBD during the day or in the evening.
