Moetai Brotherson has been at the helm of French Polynesia, an autonomous French territory, for just over 3 months now. After just a few weeks in power, he has announced the forthcoming vote on a new bill, entitled "article LP3". A highly anticipated article!
In this soon-to-be-presented text, the local executive announces its intention to legalize the production and consumption of CBD (cannabidiol) products. Naturally, these products will remain controlled. For example, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychotropic molecule of the cannabis plant) levels may not exceed 0.3%.
Interesting news, similar to what was recently announced in Martinique. As a result, CBD shops will be springing up across Papeete and other Polynesian towns in the coming weeks and months. Local consumers and advocates of hemp products are therefore very excited!
CBD yes, but therapeutic cannabis too
But more than CBD, French Polynesia has, in its article of law, indicated that it will also consider legalizing cannabis for medical use. A measure supported by all the parties concerned:
- CBD and hemp professionals, who are delighted to be able to process their products directly from Polynesia. A great way to offer local products to an increasingly selective clientele.
- Healthcare professionals, for whom CBD and cannabis represent a real opportunity to support sick patients, thanks in particular to its supposed action on both stress and pain!
The latter, through Philippe Dupire, who works as a pharmacist at the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française, notably supported the numerous studies already carried out or currently underway, which would demonstrate how cannabinoids could help relieve people affected by neurological diseases such as epilepsy.
In fact, this law opens the door to something else: the imminent arrival of cannabis-based medicines. To date, there are 3 such products on sale in mainland France, including Sativex. These products could be available in Papeete in the coming weeks.
Finally, as in mainland France, no medical claims may be made. CBD and medical cannabis products must remain products that accompany existing treatments, particularly in a wellness context. They must not be used in the form of medication.

Even so, some people are still not entirely satisfied. This is particularly true of members of the Polynesian Syndicate of hemp. The reason? The weather. Indeed, it seems impossible for hemp farmers and growers to comply with the 0.3% THC limit imposed by France and the European Union.
As a result, they are calling for a revision of the threshold. The idea here is that the total authorized THC level should be raised to 1%, as may be the case in Réunion. This would make it much simpler for hemp professionals to comply with the delta, and therefore to comply with the law!
CBD in Overseas France
In the French overseas territories, CBD is perfectly legal, at least to the same extent as it is in mainland France. However, for geographical and meteorological reasons, some places offer very little. The only difference with mainland France is the authorized THC level, which varies between 0.6 and 1% in "warm latitude" territories.

A decision that could prompt Paris to take a closer look at what's being done locally. This announcement of the legalization of CBD at 0.3% (or even 1%) THC and of cannabis for therapeutic use, could open the door to new, unsuspected advances in mainland France.
However, the executive still seems reluctant to move forward on cannabis-related issues. To date, there has been too little information on the authorization of cannabis for medical use, for example, suggesting that this project is of secondary importance.
